Hazel Ahline Tucker, 87, of Mound Valley, passed away at 5:35 a.m., Friday, October 23, 2015 in Independence, Kansas. She was born December 27, 1927 at Hale, Kansas to Walter and Rosa Lee (Piesker) Phillips. She attended grade school at Harper Creek and Hale and was a 1945 graduate of Sedan High School. On August 7, 1945, Hazel was united in marriage to Dale Owen Tucker in Independence, Kansas. They lived west of Independence until moving to Mound Valley in 1960. He preceded her in death on June 28, 1997. Hazel cooked at Union I and Hillcrest Grade Schools and later served as secretary at Mound Valley Grade School. She also worked at Labette County Co-op in Mound Valley before retiring from Automotive Controls in Independence in 1991. Hazel enjoyed cooking, crocheting, knitting, and sewing, but was mostly admired for the beautiful hand-quilting she so meticulously accomplished. She enjoyed watching sports on TV and attending school ballgames (especially when children and grandchildren were involved). Hard work was never a stranger to her as she gardened, milked cows, and helped on the farm. She was a faithful member of the Bolton Friends Church and later the Mound Valley United Methodist Church. Survivors include: Two Daughters – Gayle Wallingford and her husband, Roger Independence, KS Alice DeBauche and her husband, Greg DeSoto, KS One Son – Keith Tucker and his wife, Gail Mound Valley, KS Nine Grandchildren – Kevin Wallingford, Teresa Wallingford, Tammy Baker-Rush, Rodney Baker, Michelle Braddock, Brian Tucker, Brad Tucker, Matthew Tucker and Katie Tucker Thirteen Great-Grandchildren One Great-Great-Granddaughter One Sister – Rosalee Capps and her husband, Jerry Wichita, KS Many nieces and nephews, as well as close friends and neighbors In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Kenneth Dale Tucker, on February 2, 1992; three sisters, Normadyne Dyke, Betty Wright, and Pauline Shaw; and two brothers, Doyle Phillips and Donnie Phillips. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, October 28, 2015, at the Mound Valley United Methodist Church with Pastor Tom Reazin officiating. Burial will be in Mound Valley Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-7:30 p.m., Tuesday, at the Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Altamont. Memorials are suggested to Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice, the Mound Valley United Methodist Church, or the American Cancer Society.
