Helen E. Smith Flaharty, 91, of McCune, Kansas, died at 5:15 a.m., Thursday, July 19, 2012, at Via Christi Village in Pittsburg.
She was born March 16, 1921, in Grenola, Kansas, to Charles W. and L. Elena (Akers) Knowles. She grew up and attended school near Grenola. She then attended Emporia High School two years and was a 1937 graduate of Cedarvale High School. She later attended Kansas State Teachers College in Pittsburg where she earned a Bachelor's degree. Following college, she taught school two years in Bloom, Kansas, and was employed 25 years by McCune schools where she worked as secretary.
She was a member of the McCune United Methodist Church, McCune Lions Ladies Auxiliary, and a 60-year member of The Order of the Eastern Star. She enjoyed raising flowers and was an American Red Cross Bloodmobile volunteer. She especially enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.
She and Max A. Smith were married June 8, 1943. He preceded her in death September 10, 1978. She and Paul C. Flaharty were married December 22, 1979 in McCune. He preceded her in death March 12, 2008.

Great-Grandchildren – A.J. Capps, Katie Capps, Shelby Smith, Abby Smith, Justin Smith, Andrew Smith, Kayla Smith, Kalyn Flaharty and Breann Flaharty
In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by one brother, Herbert Knowles in 1993; one sister, Wilma Tisdale in 2006; one grandson, Brad Flaharty; and two great-granddaughters, Kia Smith and Brooklyn Botts.
Funeral services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m., Monday, July 23, 2012, at the McCune United Methodist Church. Private burial will be in Ft. Scott National Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-7:00 p.m., Sunday, at the Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Parsons.
