Herman "Sonny" E. Johnson

Herman E. "Sonny" Johnson, 84, of Parsons, passed away at 7:44 a.m., Wednesday, August 23, 2023, at Mercy Hospital in Springfield, Missouri.

Herman Eugene Johnson was born on July 19, 1939, to Norman and Gladys (Cullom) Johnson in Parsons, Kansas.  He grew up and attended school in Parsons, graduating from Parsons High School.

Baseball was a huge part of Sonny's life and Sonny was a big part of baseball in Parsons.  After he dedicated many years to playing and coaching, a baseball field was named in his honor.  Sonny was a friend to all and loved cars.

Survivors include: one daughter, Yvette Hinton of Detroit, Michigan; one brother, William "Debbo" Johnson of Parsons, Kansas; one sister, Betty Jo Johnson of Parsons, Kansas; longtime companion, Gladys Brown of Parsons, Kansas; special friend, Dr. Jed Hetlinger of Parsons, Kansas; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his son, Devery Johnson; and two sisters, Norma Lee "Shorty" Johnson and Bobby Jane Johnson-Gilmore.

The funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, August 31, 2023, at the Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home of Parsons.  Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery in Parsons.  The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, at the Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home.
