Homer R. Smith, 90, a lifelong resident of Oswego, died at 11:04 a.m., Sunday, November 8, 2009, at Freeman West Hospital in Joplin.

He was born August 6, 1919, near Oswego, Kansas, to Frank James and Rozetta (Fry) Smith. He grew up and attended country schools near Oswego. He worked as a mechanic and farmed before entering the U.S. Army in 1942. During World War II, he served in Central Europe and went in to Normandy on the second wave where he served our country on the front lines as a truck driver.

Following his discharge on October 13, 1945, he returned to Oswego where he worked as a mechanic at Farris Implement and later for the City of Oswego Street Department, retiring in 1982.

He was a member of the Community Bible Church in Chetopa. He enjoyed playing dominos, woodworking, gardening and electrical work. He especially enjoyed making birdhouses for family and friends.

He and Norma Virginia Barker were married September 13, 1945. She preceded him in death May 15, 1982. On October 26, 1984, he and Delda L. (Campbell) Smith were married. She survives of the home.

He was preceded in death by five brothers and six sisters.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, November 12, 2009, at the Community Bible Church in Chetopa. Burial will be in Oswego Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-7:00 p.m., Wednesday, at Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home, 605 Locust, Chetopa, KS.
