James R. Blackburn

James R. Blackburn, 80, of Erie, died at 11:01 a.m., Thursday, November 7, 2013 at Freeman West Hospital in Joplin.

He was born December 19, 1932 in Dennis, Kansas to John O. and Virginia I. (Prichett) Blackburn. At the age of 5, he moved with his family north of Parsons where he lived until moving to the Erie vicinity in 1964. He attended M-K-T Elementary School through the eighth grade and was a 1951 graduate of Parsons High School.

He served in the United States Army from 1951 through 1957. His basic training was in Hawaii. In addition to being stationed in the States, he was stationed in Japan, Korea during the Korean War, and Germany. Following his honorable discharge, he returned to Erie where he was manager of the Egg Department at the Neosho Valley Creamery. He also farmed from 1966 until retiring in 1994.

He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, traveling, gardening and mowing. He loved his chosen profession of farming and raising cattle.

On October 3, 1964, he and Karen A. Craig were married in Nowata, Oklahoma. She survives of the home.

Ed Blackburn Erie, KS
One Sister – Irene Rutherford
Wichita, KS

He was preceded in death by four sisters, Jaunita Rutherford, Anna Lenora Passwater, Virginia May and infant Ruth Blackburn.

Graveside services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, November 11, 2013 at East Hill Cemetery in Erie. Friends may call at their convenience from 12:00 noon until 8:00 p.m., on Sunday, at the Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Parsons.
