James R. "Jim Bob" Smith, 82, of Chetopa, passed away at 8:45 p.m., Friday, October 17, 2014 at the Mercy Hospital in Joplin, Missouri.
He was born December 4, 1931 in Chetopa to Roy A. and Nellie (Kepford) Smith. He grew up and attended school in Chetopa where he graduated from Chetopa High School. Following high school, he entered the United States Army and served during the Korean War.
He was united in marriage to Peggy June Thompson on September 6, 1953 at Baxter Springs, Kansas. Following their marriage, they lived in Chetopa for several years until moving to Kansas City, Kansas in 1962 where he operated the Twin City Septic Service for several years. In 1976, they moved to Beaumont, Texas and later Seguin, Texas where he operated the Four State Construction Company until moving back to Kansas City in 1985 where they lived until his retirement in 2003. Following his retirement, they returned to Chetopa where they had lived since.
Jim Bob loved outdoor activities of all kinds, especially, riding horses and camping. One of his favorite pastimes was "piddling" in his garage. He also loved spending time with his family. While living in Kansas City, they had attended the Assembly of God Church.
Survivors include his wife, Peggy, of the home; one son, James B. "Brad" Smith, and his wife, Rose, Paola, KS; one daughter, Cheryle Hansen, and her husband, Doug, Kansas City, KS; seven grandchildren, Mike Smith, Callie Smith, Krystal Hardman, Melissa Noernberg, Jamie Martin, Cassie Joly, and Tyler Hansen; ten great-grandchildren, two sisters, Betty Trinkle, Chetopa, KS and Mary Carrell and her husband, Jesse, Chetopa, KS.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 22, 2014 at the Community Bible Church in Chetopa with Rev. Randy Frazier officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery at Chetopa with military honors given by the American Legion Post #147 Funeral Detail from Miami, Oklahoma. The family will receive friends from 12:00 noon until service time at the church on Wednesday. Friends may call at the Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Chetopa to sign the register on Tuesday until 5 pm. There will be no viewing at the funeral home.
