James W. "Jim" Costin, Jr., 82, of rural Altamont, died at 11:35 a.m., Sunday, June 7, 2009, at Labette Health in Parsons.
He was born September 22, 1926, in Derby, Kansas, to James Walter Costin, Sr. and Georgia Katherine (Rueter) Costin. He grew up and attended schools in Derby, Kansas, and was a graduate of Derby High School.
In 1944, he entered the U.S. Army and served until the end of the war. Following his discharge, he returned to the family farm in Derby where he lived until moving to Altoona, Kansas, in 1962. He then moved to the Altamont area in 1974 where he had lived since. He was a farmer and rancher his entire life.
He and Phylis L. Peden were married September 30, 1974, in Coffeyville, Kansas. She survives of the home.
He loved his Black Angus, horses and mules, and was able to do anything he set his mind to do. He was a Baptist.

He was preceded in death by an infant son, David Costin; an infant brother, and three sisters.
The family will receive friends from 6-8:00 p.m., Wednesday, June 10, 2009, at Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Altamont. The family will hold private committal services at a future date.
