James R. "Jim" Cowart, 77, of Altamont, passed away at 6:30 p.m., Friday, January 12, 2018 at Girard Medical Center in Girard, Kansas.
He was born May 8, 1940 in Gravette, Arkansas to William E. and Gladys L. (Osterhout) Cowart. He later moved with his family to Altamont, Kansas where he attended school and graduated from Labette County Community High School in 1958.
In 1963, Jim was drafted into the United States Army where he served until being honorably discharged in 1968 with the rank of Sergeant. After his discharge, he returned to Altamont. He worked as an explosives operator at the Kansas Army Ammunition Plant from 1968 until retiring in 2007.
He was an avid fan of the Kansas City Chiefs and KU Jayhawks and enjoyed fishing.
Survivors include: Two Sisters – Jean R. Clemons of Altamont, KS, Flossie Lantz and her husband, Stan, of Caney, KS; Two Nephews – Jerry Reeves of Altamont, KS and Howard L. Reeves of Parsons, KS; Four Nieces – Karen J. McMillan and her husband, Todd, of Parsons, KSKristine D. Tucker and her husband, Ty, of Parsons, KS; Sonja L. Conley of Independence, KS and Debbie L. Gegg of Altamont, KS; Numerous Great-Nieces and Nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents, one sister, Deloris M. "Pokey" Long, on November 9, 2016; and two brothers-in-law, T.H. Long, Jr. and James Neeley.
Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, January 22, 2018 at the Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Altamont. Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Altamont.
