James H. "Jim" Phillips

January 18, 1933 — September 25, 2014

James H. "Jim" Phillips, 81, of Parsons, died at 10:56 a.m., Thursday, September 25, 2014 at the Freeman West Hospital in Joplin, Missouri.

Jim was born January 18, 1933 at Tulsa, Oklahoma to J. D. and Nancy Phillips. He grew up in Tulsa and attended school there. Following his graduation from high school, he enlisted in the United States Navy. Following his discharge from the Navy, he started working for Coors Brewing Company. In 1969, he transferred to Parsons where he continued working for Coors. Later, he started working for the U. S. Postal Service as a letter carrier until he retired after 22 years.

He enjoyed going to flea markets and had worked part-time for the Red Barn in Parsons. He was a member of Alcoholics Anonymous in Parsons and was a life member of the Brown-Bishop Post #704, Veterans of Foreign Wars in Parsons. He was married to Sharyl Swofford, they later divorced.

Survivors Include:
One Son: Nick Phillips – Oswego, Kansas
Eight Grandchildren
Two Great-grandchildren
One Brother: Bill Phillips – Dallas, Texas
Two Sisters: Mary Palmer – Omaha, Nebraska
Betty Gaines – Tulsa, Oklahoma

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, J.D. Phillips and two sons, Scott and Chad Phillips.

Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, September 30, 2014 at Oakwood Cemetery with military honors given by Brown-Bishop Post #704, Veterans of Foreign Wars in Parsons. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m., Monday, at the Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Parsons.
