James R. Schafer

James R. Schafer, 53, of Altamont, died at 7:05 a.m., Monday, December 8, 2014 at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.

He was born December 14, 1960 in Omaha, Nebraska to George and Rubie (Ballard) Schafer. He grew up in Independence, Kansas where he attended school and was a graduate of Independence High School.

For many years, he worked at Grandview Products in Parsons before beginning employment at Vision Woodworks in Cherryvale.

He enjoyed music, being a disc jockey, fishing, and all sports. He was an avid fan of the Kansas Jayhawks and Dallas Cowboys and enjoyed NASCAR. He spent the last three years of his life enjoying time with his granddaughter. He also enjoyed special time with his nieces and nephews.

He and Robbin Bennett were married April 26, 1991 in Miami, Oklahoma. She survives of the home.

In addition to his wife, survivors include one daughter, Shelby Schafer; and one granddaughter, Danielle, both of the home; his mother, Rubie Kirk of Neodesha, KS; one brother, Larry Schafer and his wife, Lisa, of Durham, KS; three sisters, Debbie Cunningham, Wichita, KS, Brenda Prather, Neodesha, KS, and Tammie Royston and her husband, Andrew, Neodesha, KS; a grandmother, Hazel Schafer, Neodesha, KS; brothers-in-law, T. J. Bennett, Wamego, KS, and David Bierbrodt, Altamont, KS; three sisters-in-law, Kim Bennett, Tammi Bennett, and Jessica Stice, all of Parsons, KS; nephews, Brett, Jacob, Keith, Christopher, Caleb and Joey; nieces, Breign, Tegan, Tori, Megan B., Jarin, Jentri, Megan S., Leah and Rachel; and several great-nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his father, George Schafer; his maternal and paternal grandparents, and several uncles.

Graveside services will be held at 3:30 p.m., Friday, December 12, 2014 at Lake Creek Cemetery near Bartlett. The family will receive friends from 7-8:00 p.m., Thursday, at the Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Altamont.

Memorials are suggested to the Schafer Educational Fund to be established for his daughter and granddaughter. These may be left at or mailed to Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home, P.O. Box 325, Altamont, KS 67330.
