James A. "Jim" Waln, 56, of Independence, Kansas, died at 4:56 a.m., Saturday, July 26, 2008, at Mercy Hospital in Independence following a brief illness.
He was born December 20, 1951, in Concordia, Kansas, to Francis William Waln, Sr. and Wauneta Elmina (Hiner) Waln.
He grew up and attended schools in Belleville, Kansas. He served in the U.S. Marines from 1972-1975 in the military police. Following his discharge, he moved to Wichita. In 1996, he moved to Independence where he had lived since.
He worked for Tri-State Motor Transit in Joplin, Missouri, for 20 years. He was currently working for Transwood Cement Company as a truck driver.
He was baptized in the Christian Church. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign wars in Independence, Kansas, Springfield, Missouri and Belleville, Kansas. He enjoyed various aspects of the U.S. Marines and collecting memorabilia. He also loved model trains.
He and Carolyn Splichal were married. They later divorced.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Francis William Waln, Jr.
Funeral services will be held at 5:00 p.m., Tuesday, July 29, 2008, at the Mound Valley Methodist Church. The family will receive friends immediately following the service until 7:00 p.m. Graveside services will be held at 12:00 noon, Friday, August 1, 2008, at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Belleville, Kansas, with military rites.
