Janice N. Shipman, 80, of rural Altamont, passed away Monday, February 5, 2018 at her home.
She was born September 22, 1937 in Bartlett, Kansas to John and Mary (Summers) Filson. Janice grew up in Bartlett and graduated in 1955 from Labette County Community High School in Altamont. Following high school, she moved to Wichita where she was employed by White Equipment Company.
On June 26, 1955, she and James A. "Jim" Shipman were married at the Bartlett United Methodist Church. After marriage, the couple continued to live in Wichita until returning to the family farm south of Altamont in 1956. Janice was employed by Farm Bureau Insurance in Altamont several years before moving to the Farm Bureau regional claims office in 1978. After 31 years of service to Farm Bureau Insurance, Janice retired in 1999.
She was a member of the Altamont United Methodist Church and was currently attending Christ's Church of Labette County. Janice enjoyed quilting, crocheting, knitting, discussing politics, going to the casinos and horse races, and was an avid reader. She loved spending time with her family, attending her grandchildren's activities, and was actively involved in the Altamont Senior Center.

One Daughter – Sandra Kaspar and her husband, Wes, of Altamont, KS
Eight Grandchildren – Kimberlie, Jamie, Laura, Tracy, Andrew, Michael, Stephen, and Matthew
Twenty-Eight Great-Grandchildren
One Great-Great-Granddaughter
One Brother – Maurice Filson of Joplin, MO
She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 46 years, James A. "Jim" Shipman, on December 5, 2001; her parents, John and Mary Filson, one brother, John Harley Filson; and a nephew, Larry Hall.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, February 10, 2018 at the Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Altamont. Burial will be at Lake Creek Cemetery near Bartlett. The family will receive friends from 7-8:00 p.m., Friday, at the funeral home.
