Jerry Chesnutt, 76, of Chetopa and longtime Labette County auctioneer, passed away, Tuesday, January 12, 2021, at Landmark Hospital in Joplin.

Horace Jerry Chesnutt was born on September 22, 1944, to Horace Myrn and Laura Jean (Tullis) Chesnutt in Columbus, Kansas. Jerry lived his entire life on the same farm in rural Chetopa. He attended school in Chetopa, graduating from Chetopa High School.

Following high school, Jerry attended Northeast Oklahoma State, Labette Community College and Pittsburg State University. In 1961, he joined his father Horace in his auctioneering business. Jerry branched out into the real estate business in 1970 along with continuing his auction business. He was still auctioneering as recently as last Fall.

He was a member of the Oswego Masonic Lodge. His greatest enjoyment came from spending time with his family and friends. He was known for his sense of humor and always enjoyed telling jokes. One of his favorite activities was going to garage sales and trading "junk."

One son – Cody Chesnutt of Oswego, Kansas

Two grandchildren – Kristen and Austin Chesnutt

One sister – Myrna Chesnutt of Chetopa, Kansas

The funeral service will be at 2:00 p.m., Monday, January 18, 2021, at the Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Chetopa. Burial will follow at the Lake Creek Cemetery in Bartlett. Friends may call to sign the register from Noon to 8:00 p.m., Sunday, at the funeral home. The funeral service can be viewed live on the Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home Facebook page.   For all events, social distancing guidelines will be followed, including the requirement of face masks.

Memorials are suggested to the Labette County Fair Board. These may be left at or mailed to Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home, P.O. Box 346, Chetopa, KS 67336.
