Jerry A. Elder, 71, of Altamont, died at 6:11 p.m., Monday, August 31, 2009, at Freeman West Hospital in Joplin, Missouri.
He was born June 5, 1938, in Parsons, Kansas, to Claude "Art" and Evelyne (Luman) Elder. He grew up and attended schools in Altamont, was a 1956 graduate of Labette County Community High School, and a 1960 graduate of Pittsburg State College. While attending college, he worked at the Altamont Journal as a typesetter.
He and Kay Frances Wells were married June 12, 1960, at the Altamont United Methodist Church. Following marriage, they lived in Parsons where he worked at Burnette's Printing, retiring from there in 2000. In 1984, they moved from Parsons to his family home in Altamont where they have lived since. He also worked as a cameraman for the Altamont City Council.
He was a member of the Altamont United Methodist Church. He enjoyed hunting, baseball, bowling and hockey, and especially enjoyed spending time with family and friends.

One Great-Granddaughter – Elizabeth Newton
He was preceded in death by his parents, and three infant siblings, Jack, Joe and Marilyn Elder.
Graveside services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m., Thursday, September 3, 2009, at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Altamont. Friends may call at Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Altamont to sign the register. The casket will remain closed.
