Jessie C. Kepford, 90, lifelong resident of Chetopa, died at 12:05 a.m., Thursday, May 3, 2012, at Webb City Health and Rehabilitation Center in Webb City, Missouri.

He was born November 14, 1921 in Chetopa, Kansas to George W. and Bertha Alice (Turnbough) Kepford. As a young boy, he grew up and attended school in Chetopa. During World War II he served in the United States Army.

Upon his honorable discharge, he returned to Chetopa where he worked for a time at the power plant. He then began his career as a postal clerk until retiring in 1972. After retirement, he worked at Huntsman, Inc. in Chetopa and later as a custodian for Chetopa schools.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Chetopa and had served as Chetopa City Councilman and also on the Chetopa Volunteer Fire Department. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening, and tinkering in his shop. Through the years he especially enjoyed spending time with his family and being involved in his children's and grandchildren's activities.

He and Alma Louise Riley were married November 21, 1948 in Oswego, Kansas. She survives of the home.

Five Grandchildren – Kimberly Garvin and husband, Eric; Kenyon Diehl and wife, Michelle; Kelsey Chewning and husband, Travis; Megan Garcia and husband, Angel; and Alysha Coon and husband, Mike
Six Great-Grandchildren – Tristin and Page Garvin; Caleb, Jocelyn and Demitry Diehl; Sophie Chewning, and one, Riley Gibson Coon, on the way; Two Step-Great-Grandchildren – Dalynn and Deanna Coon

He was preceded in death by six brothers and four sisters.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, May 8, 2012 at the First Baptist Church in Chetopa. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery in Chetopa. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until service time at the church on Tuesday.

Memorials are suggested to First Baptist Church in Chetopa. These may be left at or mailed to Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home, P.O. Box 346, Chetopa, KS 67336.
