Joe D. Proctor, 87, of Mound Valley, died at 7:30 a.m., Friday, October 20, 2006
at the Integris Baptist Regional Health Center in Miami, Oklahoma.

Being one of fifteen children, he was born June 20, 1919 to John Cyrus and Lucy Matilda (Mitchell) Proctor near Grove, Oklahoma As a boy, he grew up and attended school in Commerce, Oklahoma, and graduated from Southwest City, Missouri.

In Columbus, Kansas on April 2, 1940, he married Doris Morton. She survives of the home. On January 5, 1948 his family moved to Mound Valley from Commerce, Oklahoma. At that time, he became the manager of the Hulett Lumber Company and was the manager for 38 years in the same location. In 1976, the name of the firm was changed to J. A. Lee Lumber and Hardware, Inc.

He served in the U. S. Navy in the Pacific and was discharged in 1946. He served on the Mound Valley District #40 School Board for 15 years (1948-1963), served two terms on the city council and several terms as president of Booster Club. Joe was a Past Master of the Masonic Lodge, a 32nd degree Mason and Past Patron of O.E.S; all of which he was a 50 year member. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Coffeyville Post. He was currently serving as Vice-President of the Mound Valley Historical Society.

His hobbies included bowling in Coffeyville, Cherryvale and Oswego; traveling in all states except Alaska, and hunting quail. Since 1955 he had vacationed in Ely, Minnesota where he had enjoyed fishing. He had been the Mound Valley town Santa Claus since the late 1950's until three years ago. He enjoyed planting trees for the future generations and was curator of the roses at the United Methodist Church in Mound Valley where he was also a member and served in most of the lay office capacities.

He was preceded in death by nine brothers and four sisters.

Funeral services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, October 24, 2006 at the United Methodist Church in Mound Valley. Burial will be in the Mound Valley Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7:00 – 8:00 p.m., Monday, October 23, 2006 at the Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Altamont.
