Joe A. Shields, 86, of Galesburg, passed away at 9:54 p.m., Monday, August 14, 2017 at Labette Health in Parsons.

He was born December 18, 1930 in Cherryvale, Kansas to Clarence A. and Elizabeth Jane (Graham) Shields. As a young boy, he grew up and attended school in Cherryvale where he also worked in a bakery.

He served in the United States Army during the Korean War. Following his honorable discharge, he worked on the family farm with his father. He later worked on the "section gang" for the railroad, for Duecy Grain in Galesburg, and Bush Hog in Galesburg for 23 years before retiring.

He was a member of the Galesburg United Methodist Church and the American Legion in Chanute. Joe enjoyed fishing and spending time with his dogs, Skippy and Chico.

He and Melba J. Burris were married June 28, 1969 at the former First Methodist Church in Parsons. The couple recently celebrated 48 years of marriage.

Numerous Cousins

He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant son, Rodney Joe Shields; one brother, Jack Shields; one sister, Lavonna Shields; and two stepsons, Douglas Lieurance and Allen Ray Lieurance.

The family will receive friends at 1:00 p.m., Monday, August 21, 2017 at the Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Parsons.

Memorials are suggested to the Parsons Presbyterian Manor. These may be left at or mailed to Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home, P.O. Box 374, Parsons, KS 67357.
