John Edgar Daley, 91, of Overland Park, Kansas, formerly of Parsons, Kansas, passed away at 3:19 p.m., Monday, March 7, 2011, at Villa St. Francis Care Facility in Olathe, Kansas.
He was born August 14, 1919, in Parsons, Kansas, to John Sylvester and Mary (Steils) Daley. During World War II, he served in the United States Army and, upon his honorable discharge, returned to his hometown of Parsons.
He was employed by the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad, also known as the Katy Railroad, and retired as Head Yard Clerk in August of 1980 after 43 years of service. He was instrumental with helping usher in the use of computers for the railroad in the 70's. This experience inspired him to audit every course available at Labette Community College which dealt with computer programming and usage. He authored eight books on the history of the Katy Railroad listing the employees and positions over the years for the Parsons Katy hub.
Tennis was another lifelong passion and, through the years, taught many of the young children in Parsons to enjoy the game. In his honor, the John Daley Tennis Tournament is held each summer in Forest Park in Parsons.
He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Parsons and a 3rd degree member of the Knights of Columbus.
On June 10, 1946, he and Mary Catherine "Kitty" Altepeter were married at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Parsons. The couple was blessed with four children, five grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. In 2004, they moved to Overland Park to be near family. She preceded him in death July 8, 2009.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Rita Daley Bash, Margaret Lansdowne and Mary Williams; and three brothers, Nicholas, Michael, and Bernard Daley.
The funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, March 14, 2011, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Parsons. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. The rosary will be held at 7:00 p.m., Sunday, at Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Parsons where the family will receive friends immediately following the rosary.
