John J. Flynn

John J. "Jack" Flynn, Jr., 92, of Parsons, passed away the morning of Friday, May 17, 2024, at his home.

John Joseph Flynn, Jr. was born on February 8, 1932, to J.J. and Mary Margaret (Conley) Flynn in Kansas City, Missouri.  As a young boy, he attended St. Patrick Grade School and Parsons Junior and Senior High Schools, graduating with the class of 1949.  Following high school, Jack continued his education at Regis College in Denver and Creighton University in Omaha.  From 1951 to 1953, he served in the United States Navy and was active duty in the Korean War from 1952 to 1953.

After being honorably discharged from the Navy, Jack began his banking career at the State Bank of Parsons in 1953.  In 1971, he was named President of the bank, a position he held until retiring in 1985.

A lifelong Catholic, Jack was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Parsons and a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus.  Over the years, he held leadership positions in several civic organizations including Mid America, Inc., Parsons Chamber of Commerce, Kansas Easter Seal Society, Elks Club, Parsons Industries, Parsons Country Club and United Way, Parsons.  He had also been a member of the Parsons Planning Commission, the Labette County Community College Endowment Association, and the Labette Center for Mental Health Board.

He enjoyed spending time with his wife and his children.  Other favorite hobbies were golfing, woodworking, hunting, fishing and playing poker.

On October 10, 1953, Jack and Therese Ann Patten were united in marriage at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Parsons.  She preceded him in death on July 11, 2017.

Survivors include:

Three children – Diane E. Fahey and her husband, David, of Strasburg, Colorado

John J. Flynn, III of Grove, Oklahoma

Mark G. Flynn and his wife, Terri, of Parsons, Kansas

Nine grandchildren

18 great-grandchildren

Two sisters – Peggy Kenefick of South Dakota

Carolyn Antinori and her husband, Gene, of Forsyth, Missouri

One brother-in-law – Paul Worsham of California

He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 64 years, Therese; one daughter, Susan M. Keller on January 9, 2020; and three brothers, Mike Flynn, Pat Flynn, and Glen Brenner; and one sister, Paula Worsham.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, May 21, 2024, at the Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home of Parsons.  The rosary will be prayed at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, May 22, 2024, at St Patrick Catholic Church in Parsons, prior to the 10:30 a.m. funeral Mass.  Burial will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Parsons.

Memorials are suggested to St. Vincent de Paul Society of Parsons.  These may be left at or mailed to Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home, P.O. Box 374, Parsons, KS 67357.
