John A. Patterson, 72, of Parsons, died at 7:45 a.m., Friday, March 9, 2007, at Elmhaven East Nursing Home in Parsons.
He was born August 23, 1934, in Strang, Oklahoma, to Amos and Pearl (Johnson) Patterson, moving to Chetopa, Kansas at an early age. He attended Chetopa schools graduating in 1952. He attended one year at Pittsburg State University and later one semester at Coffeyville Community College.
From 1955 through 1957, he served two years in the United States Army, primarily at the White Sands Proving Grounds in New Mexico.
In 1957, he returned to college and earned his Associate Degree from Coffeyville Community College. In 1960 he earned his Bachelor of Science Degree, and in 1962 his Master's Degree, both from Pittsburg State University.
He was a teacher and coach at Hamilton High School in Hamilton, Kansas, before accepting an administrative position in 1963 as principal at Quapaw Junior and Senior High School in Quapaw, Oklahoma, and later as acting superintendent. He then accepted a position at Chetopa where he was elementary principal, teacher and coach.
He joined the faculty at Labette Community College in 1967 as a social science instructor, assistant basketball coach and track coach. He was head basketball coach from 1971 through 1975 at which time the program was discontinued. From 1975 until 1981, he was LCC's golf coach; that sport was also discontinued. He also taught history at the college.
He served as chairman for the social science/recreation/health division at LCC for three years and later as interim dean of instruction and interim president. He taught for 35 years, retiring in 1993.
He enjoyed golf, horse racing and playing cards. He was a member of the Faith United Methodist Church in Parsons.
He and Patricia Anne Burrows were married on October 16, 1953, at the home of her grandmother, Mrs. Emma Frogley in Chetopa. She survives of the home.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Russell and Willard Patterson.
Graveside services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m., Monday, March 12, 2007, at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Chetopa, Kansas. The family will receive friends from 3:00 – 4:00 p.m., Sunday, March 11, 2007, at the Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Parsons.
