Joseph M. "Joe" Mayfield

Joseph M. "Joe' Mayfield, 82, of Chetopa, died at 7:30 a.m., Friday, November 23, 2012 at the Chetopa Manor. He had been in failing health.

He was born August 10, 1930 in rural Cherokee County, Kansas to Claude and Charlotte (Miller) Mayfield. As a child, he moved with his family to Chetopa and was a graduate of Chetopa High School. He later moved to Sonoma, California where worked as a plumber for many years. In 1978, he returned to Chetopa where he owned and operated the Welch Sale Barn until 1989. He then did construction and plumbing work and also raised cattle. He enjoyed deer and quail hunting and working his cattle and horses.

In earlier years he attended the Baptist Church.

He and Betty Jo Ballard were married on August 7, 1949 in Chetopa. She preceded him in death on April 22, 1988. He married Irene (Steinmetz) Smith on December 18, 2002, in Miami, Oklahoma.

Three Stepsons – Curtis Smith Dewey, Oklahoma
Steve Smith Girard, Kansas
Joshua Smith Frontenac, Kansas
Two Stepdaughters – Paige Ellis Nevada, Missouri
Jennifer Smith Chetopa, Kansas
Seventeen grandchildren, thirty great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren, ten step-grandchildren and one step-great-grandson
One Brother – Carl Mayfield Miami, Oklahoma
Two Sisters- Virginia Mayfield Tempe, Arizona
Lucille Campbell Bakersfield, California

He was preceded in death by three brothers, three sisters, one grandson, and one great-grandson.

Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, November 26, 2012 at the Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Chetopa. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m., Sunday at the funeral home.

Memorial donations are suggested to the Chetopa Community Bible Church. These may be left at or mailed to Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home, P.O. Box 346, Chetopa, KS 67336.
