Julia Jean Shaffer

November 17, 1942 — July 23, 2006

Julia Jean Shaffer, 63, of rural Parsons, entered rest at her home on Sunday, July 23, 2006 at 7:00 p.m. after an intense short battle with pancreatic cancer.

She was born November 17, 1942 in Morris (Kansas City), Kansas to Edward and Leta (Billups) Scott. She attended Morris Grade School and graduated from Turner High School. While living in Kansas City, Kansas, she was employed by Sears, Roebuck and Company, Phillips Petroleum and TransWorld Airlines (TWA).

She married Charles E. Shaffer October 21, 1966 in Kansas City, Kansas. The coupled moved to the Parsons area in the early 1970's and maintained residency until the time of her death.

Charles and Julia owned and operated Shaffer's Greenhouse from 1974 to 1989. While living in Parsons, she was employed by Banker's Computer Center, Inc., Steve Togs Garment Mfg., Broderick Co., Power Flame, MKT/Union Pacific Railroad, University of Kansas Research Center, Heck and Wicker, Inc., Farmers Home Administration, White's Professional Tax Service, Lakota, Inc. in Ft. Scott, Able Design Plastics, Inc. in Pittsburg, Parsons Country Club and retired in 2004 from WSKT.

She graduated from Pittsburg State University with a Bachelor's Degree in Accounting in 1991 and a Master's Degree in Business Administration in 1994. During her pursuit of education advancement, she received several honors and achievements including being named to the PSU Dean's Honor Roll and successful completion of all four parts of the CPA Examination. She was a member of Delta Mu Delta, Institute of Managerial Accountants and OWLS, Older and Wiser Learners. She also was a Volunteer Income Tax Assistant.

Shaffer's Tax and Accounting Service was established late in 1989 and was fully operated by Julia until the beginning of her illness in January 2006. Julia was passionate about her family, home gardening, landscaping and woodworking. She was an accomplished seamstress, florist and cake decorator.

She was preceded in death by her father, Edward Scott; a granddaughter, Elizabeth Ghering; and nephew, Earl Whetstone.

Following cremation, a memorial service is scheduled for 2:00 p.m., Saturday, July 29, 2006 at the Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Parsons. The family will receive friends at 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home prior to the service. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery.
