Katherine A. "Kathy" Alloway, longtime Edna resident, passed away at 11:55 p.m., Tuesday, December 29, 2020, at Good Samaritan Society in Parsons.
Katherine Anne Hoppock was born on May 4, 1950, to Eldon Ray and Virginia Colleen (Rexwinkle) Hoppock in Coffeyville, Kansas, the oldest of five children. As a young girl, she grew up in Northeast Oklahoma, just south of the Oklahoma-Kansas border. She attended Ideal Elementary School and performed in ballet and tap dancing in Coffeyville. After graduating from Labette County High School, she attended Northeast Oklahoma University.
In 1970, Kathy and Eugene Alloway were united in marriage. She was actively involved in the farm and ranch operation, driving tractors, working cattle and also managing a semi-truck business. At the same time as raising a family and working on the farm, Kathy was a devoted 4-H parent and volunteer. Not only did she make sure her own children never missed a meeting, event, practice or fair, she also made sure other children had the same opportunity.
A life-long student at heart, Kathy returned to college in her 40's. After attending Labette Community College, she earned with honors a Bachelor's and a Master's from Pittsburg State University. For a time, she was a substitute teacher at LCHS. She also taught English at LCC. As a non-traditional student, Kathy discovered her talent in creating art and poetry. Several of her poems were recognized and published by the Pittsburg State University Cow Creek Review.
Kathy was known for her generosity in helping her family, friends and neighbors. She didn't know a stranger and her quick-wit and gift for gab made Kathy a natural at socializing. Her greatest joy came from spending time with her family. She loved to shop, especially with her daughters and her daughter-in-law, and taking trips to Branson with the grandkids. She also enjoyed many hobbies, including crafts, sewing, cooking, reading, landscaping, gardening and planning parities and get-togethers.
