Katheryn L. Holland, 92, of Las Vegas, Nevada, and formerly of Parsons, Kansas, died at 6:05 a.m., Sunday, October 19, 2014 at Mercy Hospital in Joplin, Missouri.
She was born November 1, 1921 in St. Paul, Kansas to Joseph P. and Zella (Stevenson) Gahagan. As a young girl she grew up in St. Paul and, at the age of nine, moved with her family to Parsons where she graduated from Parsons High School. During World War II, she worked at the Kansas Army Ammunition Plant.
She and Russell Carter were married on January 13, 1946 in Parsons. After marriage, they lived in Parsons until moving to Chanute where they lived until returning to Parsons where they owned and operated Carter Motors. She also was a Luzier cosmetic consultant. Mr. Carter preceded her in death on May 22, 1977. Following her husband's death, she returned to the Kansas Army Ammunition Plant where she worked as a safety inspector until retiring in 1990.
On November 28, 1991, she and John R. Holland were married in Las Vegas, Nevada. After marriage, the couple lived in Las Vegas. He preceded her in death on July 30, 2014.
Katheryn was a member of the former St. Mary's Catholic Church, now St. Patrick's, and its Altar Society. In earlier years, she enjoyed working on the election board, golfing, reading cookbooks, playing bridge, and cleaning house. She especially enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren.
Survivors include one son, R. L. Carter, Jr., Parsons, KS; one daughter, Kaylene McCullough and her husband, James, Parsons, KS; two grandchildren, Dustin Barnhart, Parsons, KS, and Alisha Mulkey and her husband, Jason, Webb City, MO; two sisters-in-law, Gretchen Gahagan and Nadine Gahagan; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Joe, Harold, and Jim Gahagan; two sisters, Jerry Underhill and Esther Ramsey; and one step-sister, Clarice Hammett.
The funeral Mass will be at 10:00 a.m., Monday, October 27, 2014 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Parsons. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. The rosary will be prayed at 5:00 p.m., Sunday, at the Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Parsons where the family will receive friends immediately following the rosary.
