Larry Dean Spriggs

May 14, 1949 — September 21, 2016

Larry Dean Spriggs, 67, of Oswego, died at 10:11 p.m., Wednesday, September 21, 2016, in the Emergency Room at Labette Health in Parsons. He had been in his usual health and his death was unexpected.

He was born on May 14, 1949 on the family farm in rural Oswego to Ross O. and Anna L. (Hinman) Spriggs. Larry graduated the 8th grade from the school of Hard Knocks. He quit school to work to help out his family. Larry went into the family trade of cement finishing and joined Local 44 Operative Plasterers and Cement Finishers as an apprentice. He was in Local 518 Kansas City and was their business agent for Local 247 of Parsons.
Larry was a part owner in Spriggs Bros. Cement Finishing and J&L Spriggs Cement Finishing. Larry and his wife Peggy owned 5-Star Cement Finishing. Larry was very well known for his skill at finishing concrete steps and base. He was highly skilled as a layout man and trowel machine operator. In the 1970's, he and his brothers had around 40 finishers working for them. Larry always said that if you wanted to see the country, follow him because he traveled everywhere pouring concrete, including Alaska. Larry has done several jobs including those at the University of Kansas and Pittsburg State University.

Larry was also known for his excellent marksmanship for shooting. It was no surprise to see him throwing eggs in the air just to shoot them. He always said if you ever wanted to bet him at shooting you would be sure to lose! Larry lived to fish and hunt until his health declined. After that, he picked up a new hobby of making scroll work. He loved working with wood, and just recently entered pieces into the Labette County Fair where he won several awards.

Larry was married to Margaret "Peggy" Lett on New Year's Day 1966. He was only 16 and Peggy was 18. They just celebrated their Golden Anniversary this last January surrounded by friends and family. Larry and Peggy have two daughters, Regina and Cindy. Even if Larry was working far away, he would try his best to get home every night to see his girls and check on their small hog farm.

Larry found Jesus and was a member of the Western Way Cowboy Church. He has requested for all not to weep, as his savior is with him.
