Larry VanLeeuwen, 74, of St. Paul, passed away Monday, June 20, 2016 at the University of Kansas Hospital in Kansas City, Kansas.
He was born March 8, 1942 at Mercy Hospital in Parsons, Kansas to Joseph "Joe" and Ethel B. (Cooney) VanLeeuwen. As a young boy, Larry grew up on the family farm in rural St. Paul. He attended school in St. Paul and was a 1961 graduate of St. Paul High School.
He and Betty Jean "Jeanie" Maffei were married October 26, 1968 in Greenbush, Kansas. Throughout his adult life, he farmed and raised cattle and was currently living on the family farm he grew up on as a child.
He was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church in St. Paul and the Knights of Columbus. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family and thoroughly enjoyed his chosen profession of farming.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Jean "Jeanie" VanLeeuwen, of the home; two daughters, Leanna Doherty and her husband, Darren, of Farlington, KS and Laurie Jean VanLeeuwen of St. Paul, KS; six grandchildren, Tressa Beezley and her husband, Zach, of Girard, KS, Josh Newberry of Kansas City, KS, Garrett Newberry, Ethan Doherty, Abi Doherty and Carter Doherty, all of Farlington, KS; one great-grandchild, Briggs Beezley of Girard, KS and one on the way; two sisters, Betty Westhoff and her husband, Chuck, of St. Paul, KS and Donna Treiber and her husband, Carl, of Altamont, KS; a brother-in-law, Don Bradshaw of Walnut, KS; his aunt and Godmother, Lorene VanLeeuwen, of St. Paul, KS; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Lyle VanLeeuwen; and one sister, Ellen "Sis" Bradshaw.
The funeral Mass will be at 10:00 a.m., Friday, June 24, 2016 at St. Francis Catholic Church in St. Paul. Burial will follow at St. Francis Cemetery. The rosary will be prayed at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, at St. Francis Catholic Church. The family will receive friends immediately following the rosary.
