Lawrence Eugene "Gene" Spielbusch, 77, a lifetime farmer of rural Parsons, died at 9:05 a.m., Wednesday, July 29, 2009, at Prairie Mission Retirement Village in St. Paul, Kansas. He had been in failing health.

He was born November 2, 1931, on the family farm in rural St. Paul, to Herman Eugene and Mary (Lero) Spielbusch. He attended rural St. Paul elementary schools through the 8th grade, at which time he began farming with his father.

He married Mary Jo Gahagan on October 23, 1954, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Walnut. He was a devoted husband who was looking forward to celebrating fifty years of marriage when his wife died three weeks prior to that occasion.

He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, and devoted to his religion. He raised his family, cattle, and crops on the family farm near South Mound, Kansas. He was recognized by the Parsons Jaycees in 1964 as an Outstanding Young Farmer and received the Conservation Award from Neosho County Conservation District in 1991.

He enjoyed farming with his son, activities and vacations with his family, and spending time with his grandchildren. He also enjoyed bowling, playing cards, and traveling with his wife following her retirement.

Survivors include one daughter, Ruth Kindall and her husband, Jim, of Parsons; one son, Edward E. Spielbusch and his wife, Kim, of Erie; four grandchildren, Jake Spielbusch, Tracy Spielbusch, Kyle Spielbusch and Emily Young; a brother, William Spielbusch of St. Paul, and a sister, Oleta Venhaus, of Humboldt.

The funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, August 1, 2009, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Parsons with Fr. Jason Borkenhagen officiating. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery. The rosary will be held at 6:00 p.m., Friday, at Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home, where the family will receive friends immediately following. Friends may call at their convenience at the funeral home after 1:00 p.m. on Friday.
