Lawrence Golden

June 6, 1905 — August 20, 2006

Lawrence Golden, 101, a former resident of rural Altamont, died at 4:57 p.m., Sunday, August 20, 2006, at the Chetopa Manor Nursing Home in Chetopa, Kansas, where he had resided since April 12, 2006.

He was born June 6, 1905 in Hurdland, Missouri to Scott and Belva (Shirkey) Golden. His family moved to Kansas when he was ten years old and resided on a farm southwest of Altamont. Lawrence lived on that same farm most of his life. He and his father raised the usual grain crops; wheat, oats and some corn and also kept livestock which provided most of their day-to-day living necessities. They also raised chickens, milked cows and always had a large garden. He spent four years in the U.S. Army during World War II serving as a technical sergeant; two of those years were spent in Russia while the Allies were furnishing supplies for the Red Army. He also was stationed in Central Iran and the surrounding area.

Repairing clocks became his hobby. He especially liked to repair antique clocks which included wall clocks, old striking clocks, Ingram clocks, Coo-Coo clocks and spring wound clocks. He attended the Zion Hill Community Church.

In his latter years, he resided at the Arkhaven Nursing Home in Altamont until it closed. He then, for a time, resided at the Home Place in Oswego before moving to the Chetopa Manor.
