Lelah I. Forbes

October 2, 1911 — February 18, 2007

Lelah Irene Forbes, 95, a longtime Parsons resident, died at 7:40 a.m., Sunday, February 18, 2007, with her children by her side, at Mt. Carmel Medical Center in Pittsburg. Her death followed a brief illness. She had lived with her son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Evelyn Forbes, in Parsons for twenty years before moving, a year ago, to live with her son and daughter-in-law, Patrick and Carolyn Forbes in Pittsburg.

She was born October 2, 1911, on a farm in Hertha, Kansas, to Lon and Malissa (Newton) Gregg. She grew up and attended schools in St. Paul, Erie and Parsons. She was a telephone operator for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company and a salesperson for Stewart Drug Store in Parsons.

She and John E. Forbes were married September 3, 1935, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Parsons. He preceded her in death on October 12, 1969.

She was a member of the St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Parsons and the Daughters of Isabella and Altar Society.

She enjoyed volunteering at St. Vincent DePaul Society, was a lifelong bridge player and an avid reader of a wide variety of books.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by six brothers, Maynard, Eugene, Lloyd, Ralph, Eldon and Joe Gregg; and three sisters, Alice Knickerbocker, Mary Thomas and Eileen Grosshans.

Funeral Mass is scheduled for 10:00 a.m., Thursday, February 22, 2007, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Parsons. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Parsons. The rosary will be recited at 7:15 p.m., Wednesday, February 21, 2007, at the Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Parsons. The family will receive friends following the rosary.
