Lester L. Lewis

Lester Lewis, 84, of Altamont, passed away on Saturday, August 2, 2025, at his home.

Lester Lee Lewis was born on August 27, 1940, to Roy Lester and Ruth (Cummins) Lewis in Hamilton, Kansas.  He grew up and attended school in the Hamilton area, graduating from Hamilton High School in 1958.  Following high school, he attended vocational school at Pittsburg State University.

From 1961 to 1968, Lester honorably served as a member of the Big Red One in Germany and Vietnam.

Throughout the years, Lester had numerous jobs including a mechanic for the Army National Guard, working at Walmart and driving a bus for USD 506.

A friend to many, Lester enjoyed living in Altamont.  He also enjoyed mowing his yard, picking pecans and tearing down houses.  One of his special talents was making no-bake cookies.  His greatest joy came from spending time with his family.

In March of 2000, Lester and Sharon Ball were united in marriage in Altamont.  She survives of the home.

Steve Lewis (Jennifer) of Topeka, Kansas

Matt Lewis of Pittsburg, Kansas

Two step-daughters – Tammy Volz (Randy) of Topeka, Kansas

Kristy Hamilton (Russ) of Chanute, Kansas

Six grandchildren – Brock Pease (Jessica), Ashley Pease, Stuart Gatewood, Skylar Gatewood, Trysten Lewis (Meggen), and Stephanie Lewis

Nine great-grandchildren

He was preceded in death by his grandson, Spencer Gatewood; and two sisters, Paulene Lewis Marlar and Dorthy Lewis.

The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday, August 11, 2025, at the Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home of Parsons.  The visitation will be immediately followed by military honors presented by the Brown-Bishop VFW Post 704 at the funeral home.
