Lloyd William Tomey

Lloyd William Tomey, 98, of Chetopa, died at 10:20 p.m., Wednesday, October 24, 2007, at Chetopa Manor where he had resided since January 2006.


He was born July 3, 1909, in rural Bartlett, to William F. and Cecilia T. (Foster) Tomey. He grew up and attended school in the Bartlett area, graduating from Baylor School.

He and Fern Burrows were married November 30, 1932, in Oswego. She preceded him in death on January 20, 2000.

Through the years, Lloyd worked as an auctioneer, sold real estate and was engaged in farming. He also worked for Texas Empire Pipeline, KAAP as a boiler fireman and was a heavy equipment operator for the State of Kansas and Labette County.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge #73 in Chetopa for 57 years, the Chetopa Chamber of Commerce and Chetopa Christian Church. He also served as a 4-H leader for Chetopa Cloverleafs for a number of years, a past member of the Chetopa City Council, and had played fiddle in a band in his earlier years.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by one son, Donald L. Tomey, one daughter, Shirley F. Woods, her husband and four children, Sherri, Dewayne, Dale and Richie, in a plane crash in 1970; one sister, Nellie Harris; two brothers, Hal F. Tomey and Merle Tomey; a grandson, Kyle Tomey; and a granddaughter, Margena Johnson.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m., Sunday, October 28, 2007, at the First Christian Church in Chetopa. Burial will be in Lake Creek Cemetery in rural Bartlett with Masonic burial rites given by the Chetopa Masonic Lodge. The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m., Saturday, October 27, 2007, at the Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Chetopa.
