Lois M. Giefer, 91, of St. Paul, passed away at 2:40 a.m., Tuesday, January 3, 2017 at Prairie Mission Retirement Village in St. Paul.
She was born January 28, 1925 in South Mound, Kansas to Charles H. and Sara "Ellen" (Brown) Steinbacher. As a young girl, she grew up in South Mound and graduated as valedictorian in 1943 from St. Francis High School in St. Paul. Following high school, Lois worked at the State Bank of Parsons.
On September 12, 1944, she and Francis J. "Frank" Giefer were married in South Mound. Together they built their own farm and raised a family of nine children. She later worked as a self-employed tax preparer.
Lois was a devoted wife of 66 years, a loving mother, and an adoring grandmother. Her family was her passion. She was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church, its Altar Society, and Daughters of Isabella. She especially enjoyed gardening, playing cards, dancing, baking, cooking, sewing, and hosting get-togethers. In earlier years, Lois enjoyed serving on the election board.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Giefer, on June 12, 2011; one son, Paul F. Giefer, on October 29, 1992; one daughter, Kate Firestone, on August 21, 2016; three brothers, Raymond Steinbacher, Eugene Steinbacher, and Charles Steinbacher; and two sisters, Sara Grosdidier and Theresa Smith.
The funeral Mass will be at 10:00 a.m., Friday, January 6, 2017 at St. Francis Catholic Church in St. Paul. Burial will be at St. Francis Cemetery. The rosary will be prayed at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, at the church where the family will receive friends immediately following the rosary.
