Louis P. "Louie" Gartner

June 15, 1915 — July 10, 2009

Louis P. "Louie" Gartner, 94, a longtime barber of Altamont, died at 11:13 a.m., Friday, July 10, 2009, at the Parsons Good Samaritan Society where he had resided the past two weeks.


He was born June 15, 1915, in Franklin, Kansas, to Jacob and Louise (Semmernig) Gartner. He grew up and attended elementary school in Franklin.

During World War II, he served 20 months in the U.S. Navy. Following his discharge from the Navy, he worked three years in WPA (Works Progress Administration), and also joined the Civilian Conservation Camp for three years. He attended Detroit Barber College and returned to Franklin where he barbered until moving to Altamont in 1938. On August 5, 1940, he purchased a shop in Altamont, commonly known to all, as "Gartner Barber Shop."

He was a member of the Altamont United Methodist Church and Brown-Bishop Post No. 704, Veterans of Foreign Wars. He served as City of Altamont council member 10 years, and also as mayor 20 years. In recognition of his service to the City of Altamont, the Louis P. Gartner Recreation Area at Idle Hour Lake in Altamont was named in his honor.

Louie enjoyed dancing, fishing, hunting, trapping, and in earlier years, playing softball. He served as the local barber in Altamont for more than 70 years, and also, worked part-time as barber at local nursing homes until recently.

He and Lillian L. Robinson were married September 23, 1940, in Lamar, Missouri. She preceded him in death March 9, 2006.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, Joe, Willie, Ed and Frank; and three sisters, Kay, Mary and Grace.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, July 15, 2009, at Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Parsons. Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-8:00 p.m., Tuesday, at Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home.
