Margaret E. Baird, 92, of Chetopa, died at 4:23 p.m., Monday, March 24, 2008, at Chetopa Manor where she had resided for several years.
She was born August 6, 1915, in Boise, Idaho, to Harvey Alexander and Bertha Mae (Ihrig) Graue.
As a child, she attended Lockard School, north of Bartlett, until her family moved into Bartlett from the farm. She later attended Labette County Community High School in Altamont graduating in 1933 with a two-year teaching certificate. At the age of 17, she started her teaching career at Lockard School No. 28, a one-room schoolhouse with all eight grades.
She attended Pittsburg State University during the summers and at night, first receiving her B.S. degree and later her M.S. degree. She moved to the Ellis School No. 45 northwest of Bartlett when Lockard School was consolidated in 1951, and then taught at Bartlett until she retired in 1981.
She and Perry Baird were married May 7, 1937. They farmed many years south of Bartlett and enjoyed traveling throughout the United States with friends. He preceded her in death on April 5, 2001.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Oswego and a life-member of the Order of The Eastern Star Excelsior No. 86 in Chetopa.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Harvey Alexander Graue; and a sister, Mae E. Peters.
Funeral services are scheduled for 10:00 a.m., Thursday, March 27, 2008, at the First Presbyterian Church in Oswego. The family committal will be in Lake Creek Cemetery, rural Bartlett. The family will receive friends from 7:00 – 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 26, 2008, at the Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Chetopa.
