Margery Louise (Olson) Miller, 95, formerly of Parsons Kansas, passed away September 29, 2013 at Via Christi Village, Pittsburg, Kansas. She had been a resident of the Village since 2007.
She was born on June 14th, 1918 in Savonburg, Kansas to Andrew Belmont Olson and Nancy Mary (Comstock) Olson. On January 1, 1942 she was united in marriage to Ernest William Miller in Chanute, Kansas. He preceded her in death on September 16, 2001. In 2002 she moved to Pittsburg.
She grew up in Erie, Kansas and graduated from Erie High School in 1936. Her family moved to Chanute in 1936 where she graduated from Chanute Junior College in 1938. Beginning in 1938, she attended Kansas State University, studying Institutional Management, and leaving after her marriage and husband's enlistment in the Army Air Corps. After rearing her family, she returned to school and graduated from Pittsburg State University in 1969 with a BS in Elementary Education. She taught at Garfield Elementary School in Parsons for over 10 years.
Growing up, Marge was an avid tennis player and golfer, and played the violin. She continued playing golf in Parsons, winning the Parsons Country Club ladies championship in 1959. She was a past member of the First Christian Church in Parsons and present member of First Christian Church in Pittsburg and was active in her church at local and state levels. Marge enjoyed quilting and reading, and maintained a lifelong intellectual curiosity and love of learning that inspired everyone around her. The love of and interest in her family was paramount to her throughout her life.
Survivors include her brother, Kenneth Olson of Chanute, KS and her four children: Kent Miller (Leslie), Denver, CO; Janis Ward (Greg), Pittsburg, KS; Phillip Miller (Janet), Kansas City, MO; and Marianne Davis (Mark), Tulsa, OK. Nephew Don Olson (Ellaine), New Orleans, LA, Niece Debbie Deem, Etowah, TN. She leaves ten grandchildren: Gentry Griswold and Callan Clark, Denver; Derek Ward, Raytown, MO; Haydn Ward, Pittsburg, KS, T.J. Miller, Los Angeles, CA, Morgan Miller, New York, NY, Miller Davis, Los Angeles, CA, Faith Davis and MariCaroline Davis, Tulsa, OK, and Andy Miller, Kansas City, MO. She is also survived by seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Alan Burnell Olson.
Memorial services will be on October 12th at 10:30 A.M. at the First Christian Church, 705 E. Centennial, Pittsburg, Kansas, with The Rev. J. Lemert Whitmer assisted by Adah Hutchcraft, Via Christi Village Chaplain. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church. A private burial will be at Neosho County Memorial Park Cemetery in Chanute, Kansas.
