Marilyn Claire (Canfield) Walton died peacefully at Golden Living Center in Edwardsville, Kansas, on February 6, 2011, at age 86. She was born in Columbus, Kansas, on September 18, 1924, the second of three children born to Marvin and Frances (Jones) Canfield.
She grew up in Pittsburg, Kansas, where in high school she was a champion tumbler, swimmer and tennis player. She graduated from Pittsburg High School in 1941 and went on to Coffeyville Community College.
During WWII she assisted at Eagle Picher in Galena, Kansas, in the chemical laboratory that improved batteries used in U.S. Navy submarines; worked at the PX at the U.S. Army base in Chanute, Kansas; and at Bethlehem Steel Company in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, she operated levers that cut steel plates used to build Merchant Marine ships. After the war, she worked as a stenographer and secretary.
She was married for fifteen years to her high school sweetheart, John William "Jack" Walton, who served in the Pacific, both members of the Christian Science Church. Marilyn loved sports, dancing, music, knitting, sewing and cooking, and was known for her wit and her jokes, as well as frequent jovial renditions of old Andy Williams and Dean Martin tunes.
Marilyn is survived by her brother, Frank J. Canfield and his wife, Colenia, of Corsicana, Texas; her children Mary (Walton) Rose of Ft. Collins, CO, Laura (Walton) Myers of Greeley, CO, Marti (Walton) Schoen and her husband, William, of Davis, CA, John S. Walton of Florissant, MO; her grandchildren Zachary and Marissa Myers and Lara and Alana Schoen; and many Jones and Canfield cousins.
She was preceded in death by her brother-in-law and sister, Fred and Jean (Canfield) Schultz.
Her family is grateful to the caregivers at Golden Living Center for their years of support.
Memorial services will be held at Friendship Cemetery near Oswego, Kansas, at a future date and will be announced by the Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Parsons.
