Marjorie Mary Jane Howard, 95, of Erie, died at 9:50 p.m., Thursday, December 24, 2009, at her home.
She was born March 22, 19l4, in Cherokee, Kansas, the third daughter of pioneer parents William Lewis and Nancy Pearl (Jones) Stough.
She attended Cherokee schools and graduated with a Bachelor's degree in 1939 from Kansas State Teachers College of Pittsburg where she was a member of the Education, English, and Commerce honorary fraternities.
She married Everett L. Howard on February 1, 1942. He preceded her in death on September 25, 1967.
She taught at Savonburg High School three years. Her work included teaching music and coaching small vocal groups, and was in great demand to provide entertainment at community functions.
After marriage, she and her husband moved to the Erie area, where she served as the deputy county treasurer until 1956. At that time, she was employed by the late Charles Forsyth and Robert Pennington as manager of the Locke Abstract Company. She retired in 1990.
A talented musician, she generously shared her abilities. In her teens, she played the piano for the silent movies and was the accompanist for many music organizations. After moving to Erie, she was accompanist for the music department at Erie High School for several years.
Active in the Order of the Eastern Star, she held various offices but served mostly as organist. A member of the Federated Church in Erie, her service there was mainly in the music department. She sang in the choir, was director for several years, and then served as accompanist. In 2008, she suffered a stroke and was unable to continue as director of the children's choir for whom she had composed several songs, including "The Easter Song", which the children performed annually for more than 20 years.
She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, playing cards with her friends, and watching Kansas City Chiefs football.
Other memberships included the Erie Study Club, the Friendship Club, and Business and Professional Women's organization. She was a life member of the American Legion auxiliary and was the only remaining gold Star Mother in Erie.
She is survived by a son, Frank, and his wife, Eve, of Nashville, TN; daughter Nancy Martin and Gerald Capps, of Erie; three grandchildren, Andrew Martin, Elizabeth Wilson and her husband, Justin, and Charles Howard; two nieces, one nephew, and many great-nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her oldest child, Chief Petty Officer Charles Emory Howard, who lost his life during the Vietnam Conflict; a stillborn daughter; her youngest child, Laurie Howard Meyer; and two sisters, Winnie Stough and Virginia S. Martino.
