Marjorie D. "Marge" Johnston

Marjorie D. "Marge" Johnston, 84, of Parsons, died at midnight, Friday, May 1, 2009, at her home. She had been in failing health.

She was born February 14, 1925, in Joplin, Missouri, to William and Pearl (Gray) Swiney. She grew up and attended schools in Joplin where she graduated from Joplin High School and Joplin Business College.

She worked as a secretary at Jim Walters, Inc., in Joplin, for one year before moving to Parsons in 1961. While living in Parsons, she worked as credit manager from 1961-1965 at Bellas Hess Catalog, in the credit department at Sears from 1965-1967, and as a forklift operator and supply line worker at the Kansas Army Ammunition Plant from 1967 until her retirement in 1995. Following retirement, she worked part-time at Sears, and also at the former Home Improvements store.

She was a former member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, now St. Patrick's. She enjoyed doing volunteer work at St. Vincent DePaul Society, assisting with the Red Cross blood drive, and spending time at the Senior Center.

She and John O. Johnston were married in 1962 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Parsons. He preceded her in death May 22, 1997.

One Son – Jeffrey Johnston Parsons, KS

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, an infant and Irene Cook.

The funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, May 5, 2009, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Parsons. Burial will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery. The rosary will be held at 6:30 p.m., Monday, at Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Parsons with family visitation immediately following.
