Martha W. Autem, 102, of Parsons, formerly of McCune, died at 2:07 a.m., Wednesday, January 10, 2007 at the Labette County Medical Center in Parsons.
She was born June 25, 1904 in Wheeling, Missouri to Herman G. and Hattie E. (Leu) Reich. In 1910, she moved with her parents to a farm east of McCune, known as the Jordan Ranch. She attended school in McCune. In 1916, they returned to Missouri. A few years later, the family moved back to Kansas and settled on a farm 1 ½ miles north of Strauss where she lived until moving to the Friendship Villa in McCune. Prior to marriage, she was a clerk at the Doug Jones grocery store in Strauss. After her family was grown, she worked at the Kansas Ordnance Plant in Parsons.
On September 16, 1922 she married Walter Autem in Columbus, Kansas. He preceded her in death on January 24, 1961.
She became a resident of Medicalodge, south of Pittsburg in August 1997. On August 1, 2002, she moved to Elmhaven West in Parsons to be closer to family. She attended the Lutheran Church in Missouri, and in later years, had attended the Christian Church of McCune. She belonged to the Strauss Quilting Club. She loved to crochet and garden, and had made numerous lap throws for the Veterans Hospital in Wichita. She also had raised two of her grandsons, Joe and John Autem.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers, Fritz, Otto, Arthur, Oscar and Victor Reich; one sister, Meleta Pool; a grandson, Dennis Mercer in February 2003 and a son-in-law, Rex Boore in May 1962.
Funeral services are scheduled for 10:00 a.m., Friday, January 12, 2007 at the Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Parsons. Burial will be in McCune cemetery. The family will receive friends from 9:00 – 9:30 a.m., Friday, at the funeral home, prior to the service.
