Marvin L. Cherry

October 23, 1926 — December 20, 2013

Marvin L. Cherry, 87, of Parsons, went to be with his Lord and Savior at 6:55 a.m., Friday, December 20, 2013 at the home of his daughter and son-in-law in Olathe, Kansas.

He was born October 23, 1926 in rural Pittsburg, Kansas to John Leonard and Zella Mae (Fikes) Cherry. He grew up and attended school at Beulah, Kansas and was a 1944 graduate of Girard High School.

During World War II he served in the United States Army Signal Corps. Upon his honorable discharge, he worked for a time in road construction. He then attended Pittsburg State University where he studied electronics.

He and Alice Burns were married May 13, 1948 in Beulah, Kansas. Following marriage they moved to Bremerton, Washington for 14 months. In 1951, he finished school and began his 36 year employment with KG&E as a communication technician. They lived in Wichita three years before making their home in Parsons where they had lived until moving to Olathe to be near family.

He was an active member of the Parsons Church of the Nazarene where he had served as church treasurer, Sunday School superintendent, NYPS president and had been a member of the church board for many years. For 31 years he served on the District Advisory Board of the Joplin District Church of the Nazarene and had also served on the Board of Trustees of MidAmerica Nazarene University at Olathe for 28 years.

Eleven Grandchildren – Kristin Cherry, Chuck and Jessica Bailey, Ryan and K.J. Cherry, Michael and Natalie Lee; Keith and Ragan Schubert, Shane and Lynette Cherry, Nathan and Amanda Brandt, Jeffrey Sutton, Garry and Megan Turner, Jason and Monica Spencer, and Jared Wilmoth
Sixteen Great-Grandchildren

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, December 28, 2013 at the Parsons Church of the Nazarene. Burial will be in Beulah Cemetery in Beulah, Kansas. The family will receive friends from 6-8:00 p.m., Friday, at the church.
