Marvin Dean Holmes, 85, of Altamont, died at 6:36 p.m., Saturday, May 10, 2008 at Labette Health.
He was born January 3, 1923, in Altamont to Oren Frederick and Avery Belle (Atkinson) Holmes. He grew up and attended schools in Labette County and graduated from Labette County Community High School. He also attended Labette Community College.
He worked for the Boeing Aircraft Company for a time. He also served in the United States Air Force. He was owner of the former Holmes Hardware and Implement. He also worked as a pipefitter for the MKT Railroad for many years and retired from there. Dean was a licensed real estate agent and a member of the Altamont City Council during the installation of the city sewer system.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church at Altamont where he served as a deacon. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge at Altamont. He had a ham radio license and also enjoyed pitching horseshoes.
He was married to Ardith R. Bennett on August 8, 1948, at the home of her parents at rural Oswego. She survives, of the home.
Other survivors include: Three Sons: Stanley Dean Holmes of Baxter Springs, KS; Tony Alan Holmes of Bonne Terre, MO; Jeffrey Jack Holmes of Parsons, KS; Five Grandchildren, Two Step-Grandsons, Three Great-granddaughters, Two Brothers: Fred Holmes of Spartenburg, SC; Arch Holmes of New Haven, CT; Two Sisters: Wanda Raines of San Marcos, TX; Patricia Crawford of Hutchinson, KS.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Tom, and two sisters, Wintress Ross and Glenna Fischer.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, May 13, 2008, at the First Baptist Church in Altamont. Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Altamont. The family will receive friends at the church from 7 to 8 p.m., Monday.
