Mary Frances Hodges Foss

Mary Frances Hodges Foss, 101, of Altamont, died at 8:07 a.m., Sunday, August 26, 2007, at Elmhaven East Nursing Home in Parsons. She had been in failing health for several years but death was unexpected.

She was born October 11, 1905, in Reno County, Kansas, to William and Eliza (Shelton) Hodges. She graduated from Chase High School then taught for a year in a one room school.

She married Arthur Grant Foss on August 2, 1926, in Lyons, Kansas. They farmed in the Lyons area until being flooded out. At that time, they moved to Sterling then Loveland, Colorado, to work for a trucking business. They were transferred to East Peoria, Illinois where she worked for a garment factory. In 1945 they moved to a farm southeast of Oswego, where they lived until her husband's health failed at which time they moved to Kinsley, Kansas, to help care for his mother. They returned to Oswego in 1965.

They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1976. Her husband passed away in March of 1977. In 1987, she moved to the Altamont Senior Housing Center until her health failed, then she lived with her daughter, Norma, where many family members helped care for her until she moved to Elmhaven East in Parsons.

She worked as a school teacher, housewife, farmer and at the Census Bureau, area garment factories and nursing homes.

She was a member of the Oswego VFW, Rebekah's, Professional Business Women; Snowball; various extension units; Sunshine Club; American Baptist Women and We Care Group of Altamont. She was also a member of the First Baptist Church in Altamont and was a former member of the First Baptist Church in Oswego.

She enjoyed Bible study, crocheting, quilting, sewing, painting, friends and loved being around family.

She was preceded in death by her husband, daughter, Shirley Catherine, four sisters, three brothers, two grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Funeral services are scheduled for 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, August 29, 2007, at the First Baptist Church in Altamont. Burial will be in the Oswego Cemetery. Friends may call at the Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Altamont after 11:00 a.m., Tuesday. The family will receive friends from 7:00 – 8:00 p.m., Tuesday evening, at the funeral home.
