Mary Jane Houston, 74, of Chetopa, died at 6:36 p.m., Monday, May 7, 2012, at Labette Health in Parsons.
She was born June 14, 1937 in Kansas City, Missouri to Henry Glenn and Ruth (Durbin) Topping. As an infant, she moved with her family to Hallowell, Kansas where she attended grade school. She was a 1955 graduate of Columbus High School and a 1958 graduate of Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College in Miami, Oklahoma.
For a time, she worked in Little Rock, Arkansas and later at Charles F. Curry in Oswego until October of 1959. Through the years she also worked at White's Tax Service and sold insurance as an independent agent. In December of 1983, she began her own business, Houston & Associates Tax Service & Bookkeeping.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Chetopa and a 50-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star where she also served as a district aide for a number of years. She was also a member of the Chetopa Chamber of Commerce and a past member and active supporter of 4-H.
She and Clyde Houston were married July 3, 1958 in Oswego. He preceded her in death November 12, 1983.

Three Grandchildren – William, Kaylee and Tyler Houston
Following cremation, graveside memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, May 14, 2012 at Lake Creek Cemetery near Bartlett.
