Mary Lou Turner, longtime resident of Chetopa, passed away on her 81st birthday at 10:15 p.m., Monday, February 17, 2014 at Deseret Health and Rehabilitation Center in Oswego.


She was born February 17, 1933 in rural Oswego to Robert and Mae Bernice (Linderman) Swanwick. She attended Chetopa schools and was a 1951graduate of Chetopa High School.

She and Jack Addis were married July 7, 1951 in Chetopa. They later divorced. On October 7, 1994, she and Hubert Turner were married in Miami, Oklahoma. Through the years, Mary Lou had worked at Chetopa Grain, owned and operated Chetopa 5 & 10 and Addis Oil Company with her husband, and had worked a number of years for the City of Chetopa as assistant utility bookkeeper and had served as city clerk from May of 1986 until retiring in January of 1997. After retiring, she worked at Warwick's Market and assisted at Bill Thompson Insurance Agency.

She and her husband enjoyed traveling. She also enjoyed reading, hand-quilting, sewing, crocheting, and other hand crafts. Her most fulfilling hobby was doing little jobs and favors for her family. She loved anything that involved spending time with her family.

Four Grandchildren – Shanna Schofield, Katie Littlejohn and husband, Jay;
Jake Stine, and Emilee Truelove
Two Great-Grandchildren – Delaney Schofield and Shine Truelove; Seven Step-Grandchildren - Mike Holden, Brandi Carlson, Dana Born, Joel Williamson, Katy Gorentz, Lucas Gorentz and Kielyn Turner; Five Step-Great-Grandchildren - Maci Carlson, Tyce Carlson, Trent Born, Cooper Born and Chloe Born

She was preceded in death by her father, Robert Swanwick; mother and stepfather, Mae and Borden Brandon; and a brother, Bob Swanwick.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, February 21, 2014 at the Community Bible Church in Chetopa. The casket will remain closed. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-8:00 p.m., Thursday, at the Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Chetopa.
