Mary Rose Volmer

Mary Rose Volmer, 81, of St. Paul, died at 1:50 a.m., Wednesday, November 24, 2010, at Sunset Manor Nursing Home in Frontenac.


She was born July 17, 1929, in Chanute, Kansas, to Don and Thekla (Janssen) Beard. She grew up in rural Erie where she attended country school and was the salutatorian of the Class of 1947 at Erie High School.

She and Michael J. Diskin were married July 19, 1948, at St. Francis Catholic Church in St. Paul. Following marriage, the couple lived in St. Paul. He preceded her in death February 9, 1974.

On September 5, 1975, she and Cecil Volmer were married at St. Francis Catholic Church. He survives.

She was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church and its Altar Society. She also was a member of the Miraculous Medal Association and had a profound devotion for praying the rosary. She was an avid St. Paul Indians fan and enjoyed cooking, bowling, sewing, and playing cards. She was instrumental in establishing the St. Francis Thrift Shop at its current location and enjoyed volunteering there many years. In earlier years, she was also involved in her Home Demonstration Unit.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by:
One Son – Terry Diskin and wife, Suzie St. Paul, KS
Two Daughters – Paula Crager and husband, Kenny St. Paul, KS
Phyllis Hilburn and husband, Jeff Pullman, WA
Thirteen Grandchildren
Ten Great-Grandchildren
One Brother – Jay Beard Camarillo, CA

She was preceded in death by two brothers, one sister, and infant son, Anthony.

The funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, November 29, 2010, at St. Francis Catholic Church in St. Paul. Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery. The rosary will be held at 7:00 p.m., Sunday, at the church where the family will receive friends immediately following. The Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Parsons is in charge of arrangements.
