Elsie "Maxine" (McMillan) Long Braman, 81, of Frontenac, KS died Tuesday, June 19, 2018 at her home at Oakview Estates surrounded by her loving family. Maxine had been a resident of Oakview Estates since 2017, where she came to know and love the caring staff and her many fellow residents.
Maxine was born April 26, 1937 at Strauss, KS, the daughter of Fred and Elsie (Fowler) McMillian. She attended McCune schools and graduated from McCune Rural High School. On May 30, 1954, she was united in marriage to Clayton Arthur Long. He preceded her in death on December 17, 1997.
Maxine worked in the personnel office of the Parsons State Hospital and Training Center for 43 years, retiring in 1999 and moving to Frontenac to be closer to her grandchildren. Maxine loved her family and enjoyed going to their many activities. Whether it involved going to a gymnasium, a football field or a baseball park, Grandma was always in the stands cheering them on. Maxine also loved her many pets. You would often find her with a cat in her lap or a dog at her feet which provided her joy and comfort.
She also truly enjoyed traveling. Some of her favorite traveling activities included taking bus tours all over the United States, especially to see the fall foliage of the east coast, and living the life of a snowbird traveling south to Texas for ocean fishing over the winter months.
Clayton and Maxine had three children, sons Rodger Long and his wife Kaye, Jim Long and his wife Debbie, and daughter LeAnna Tompkins and her husband Tim, all of Frontenac; and her five grandchildren, Joshua Long, Brandon Long, Katelyn Sofia and husband Mike, Jennifer Long and Ryan Long.
Maxine was united in marriage again to J. C. Braman on October 1, 2000, further extending her family to include J.C.'s five children; Brenda Prewett, Linda Hubbard and husband Tom, Mandy Newberry and husband Kevin, Wes Braman and wife Stacy, and Dolly Dickens; 15 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
Maxine was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband, Clayton; two brothers, Lawrence and Fred McMillan; and five sisters, Doris Sexton, Lois Blake, Berniece Knight, Bernieta Fincher and Betty Ruth McMillan.
