Maybelle Grace Denney

Maybelle Grace (Stuart) Denney, 89, of Baldwin City, and formerly of Parsons, passed away at 4:45 a.m., Sunday, June 7, 2015, at Baldwin Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center.

She was born September 24, 1925, in Calvin, North Dakota, to Rex and Grace (Elliott) Stuart. She attended schools in Calvin until 1937 when her family moved back to Kansas. She then attended Labette County Community High School in Altamont and graduated, six months early, in December of 1942.

She was a WWII bride marrying Donald Roscoe Denney on December 27, 1942, at the First Baptist Church in Mound Valley, Kansas. Her sweetheart of 66 years preceded her in death on August 6, 2009.

During the war, she worked at the Kansas Army Ammunition Plant, while living and working on her parents' farm. When her husband returned from the war, she returned to being a housewife and mother. She went back to work in the early 60's at Elmhaven Nursing Home and the Parsons State Hospital and Training Center. She also earned a nursing degree at Labette Community College. In 1987, Maybelle retired as a licensed mental health tech from the Parsons State Hospital and Training Center. Following retirement, she served as guardian for many residents from the Parsons State Hospital and Training Center until 2008.

She was a member of the Friendship Southern Baptist Church in Parsons where she was a founding member, served as Sunday School teacher, and was actively involved in Vacation Bible School. Maybelle was also a member of the WWII women's group. She especially enjoyed her family, caring for them, and doing activities that they enjoyed.

Survivors include:
Two Daughters – Sally O'Banion Parsons, KS
Donna Curran and husband, Mike Baldwin City, KS
Daughter-in-law – Pearl Denney Chetopa, KS
Fifteen Grandchildren
Twenty-Eight Great Grandchildren
One Great-Great-Granddaughter
Numerous Nieces and Nephews

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two sons, Donald Rex and Daniel Denney; one daughter, Candace Jones, and son-in-law, Frank "Sonny" O'Banion.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, June 11, 2015 at the First Baptist Church in Parsons. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery in Parsons. The family will receive friends from 6-8:00 p.m., Wednesday, at the Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Parsons.

Memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer's Disease Association or Grace Hospice. These may be left at or mailed to Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home, P.O. Box 374, Parsons, KS 67357.
