Melvin J. Madl, 92, of a longtime farmer in the rural Walnut area, died at
12:40 a.m., Friday, August 24, 2007, at Labette Care in Parsons.
He was born January 23, 1915 in St. Paul, Kansas, to John P. Madl and Katherine Rose (VanLeeuwen) Madl. He grew up in rural St. Paul and attended the Brogan Country School.
For several years, he worked on the family farm before joining the U. S. Army during World War II. He served as a Staff Sergeant in the 137th Infantry while stationed in California and France. He was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart.
After receiving his discharge from the Army, he returned to the rural Walnut area and moved to his current home in 1948, where he farmed for many years. For a time, he also sold insurance for the National Farmers Union Insurance.
He was a member of the St. Francis Catholic Church in St. Paul and had been a member of the former St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Walnut. He was a life member of the Knights of Columbus and a 60-year member of the American Legion Post No. 292, Walnut, Kansas.
His hobbies were quail hunting and fishing. He enjoyed his family and grandchildren.
He and Barbara J. Sellers were married June 17, 1943 in University City, Missouri. She preceded him in death December 9, 2002.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by an infant son, Melvin Joseph Madl, Jr., one grandson, Thomas Joseph Madl; one brother and one sister.
Funeral mass will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, August 28, 2007, at the St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Walnut. Burial will be St. Patrick's Cemetery in Walnut. Friends may call at the church after 10:00 a.m., Monday. The Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m., Monday, at the St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Walnut, where the family will receive friends following the Rosary.
Memorials are suggested to either the St. Patrick's Cemetery Fund or the St. Francis Catholic Church.
