Mertie Fern Schenck

Mertie Fern Schenck, 91, of Independence, formerly of Altamont, died at 12:50 a.m., Thursday, June 26, 2008, at Bradford Place, in Independence, where she had resided the past 2 ½ years.

She was born October 15, 1916, in rural Labette County, near Star School, to Charles Elmer and Sarah Cora (Harris) Dobbins. She grew up in that area and was a 1933 graduate of Edna High School.

She and Earl Denzil Schenck were married March 14, 1936, at the Holiness Parsonage in Oswego. Following marriage, they moved to a farm northwest of Edna where they made their home and raised their family. Following 37 years on the farm, they moved to Independence, in 1973, where she worked for seven years at Automotive Controls Corporation until retirement in 1981.

She enjoyed quilting and being involved in church activities. She especially enjoyed spending time with family and friends. She was a member of the Bible Holiness Church in Altamont.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Schenck, June 16, 1999; a daughter, Mertie Ann Schenck, July 1954; one brother, C.O. Dobbins; and one sister, Lillie Mitchell.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2:30 p.m., Sunday, June 29, 2008, at the Bible Holiness Church in Altamont. Burial will be in North Edna Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m., Saturday, at the Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Altamont.
