Michael "Mike" Paul Goodyear, 68, passed suddenly on June 20, 2024. His last days were peaceful, spent at home with his wife.
Michael was born April 19, 1956, to Robert (R.E. or Dutch) and Mildred Goodyear in York County, Pennsylvania. The third of six children and the second in a line of five boys, Mike did what he could to stand out in a family of characters. Known to some as "Big Mike," he inspired laughter from the beginning.
Mike grew up in his dad's shop, beginning a lifetime of tinkering, rebuilding, and repairing. An autobody man by trade, Mike loved cars and owned many (including four Torinos). It was not uncommon for Big Mike to spend a weekend at a car show or Mo-Kan Dragway.
He moved to Kansas in 1977 and made Altamont his home. Mike ran an autobody shop with his father and brothers throughout the years. He spent over thirty years working for O'Brien Ready Mix, and he worked at Prairie Mission Retirement Village in retirement.
Mike married Tammy Marie Winn on October 11, 1986. They had three children. Mike loved to travel with his family and drove many miles, pulling the family's pop-up camper from one scenic location to the next. He was an avid fisherman and a voracious reader.
Perhaps more than anything in his life, Big Mike was a caretaker. He always showed up for the people he loved. He loved feeding his extended family, the church, and anyone stopping by the house. He rarely missed a game, concert, play, or halftime performance by his children. He cared deeply for his wife, transporting her to and from appointments, planting rose bushes in the garden for Mother's Day, and inundating her with her favorite Easter chocolates.
Mike is survived by his wife of 37 years, Tammy Marie Goodyear, of the home; his three children, Heather Sue Goodyear, Margaret Marie Goodyear, and Johnathan Michael Goodyear; his daughter-in-law Mary Henn and granddaughter Eleanor Rose Goodyear; and a granddog that brought him lots of laughs. He's survived by three brothers: Bob Jr. (Denise), Tracy (Barbara), and Richard (Tammy). He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Sharon Sue Carter, and a brother, Timothy Goodyear.
The family will receive friends at the Forbes Hoffman Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, June 27. A funeral will follow on Friday, June 28, at 3:00 p.m. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society or Prairie Mission Retirement Village and may be sent in care of Bath-Forbes-Hoffman, PO Box 374, Parsons, KS 67357.
